Halloween Playlist

Happy Halloween ya doofs! Even though we already did an October playlist, we had to do a halloween playlist because there are too many amazingly creepy-cool songs out there. I mean, how can you not listen to the Monster Mash and Thriller around this time of year?! But we also included a lot more than those yearly favorites. There are the ethereal, mysterious voices of CocoRosie, First Aid Kit, and Blue Foundation. Some classic rock vibes from Bowie, The Black Keys, The Who, and Portugal, The Man. And then there are just some fun, very out-there songs from the likes of the Black Lips, Kimya Dawson, and Cherry Glazerr + many more! These are all the songs you need for a perfectly haunting halloween this year. Enjoy, and have a frightful night ;)

Let's Play Dress Up Part 2

So... yesterday we gave you our top female character picks for Halloween costumes this year.  And now, we give you our top male picks! These guys are inspiring, a little kooky, and obviously, their wardrobes are on FLEEK! So check it out and get inspired by these cool characters.

Will Smith

Well, we had to start off with a favorite, and there's NO ONE quite like Will Smith. I mean, he's the grooviest, coolest, most hilarious character and real-life personality there is. And his style doesn't fall short either. Always decked out in lots of color, matched with a great facial expression, and a swagger that says "I'm too cool for you", he's one that we will never ever stop obsessing over. EVER.

Danny Zuko

Danny Zuko. The ultimate babe and Grease star. He literally kills it in the simplest of ensembles. White tee, leather jacket, hair slicked back just perfectly. No wonder Sandy falls so hard. This is a great idea for a costume, especially if you are short on time, because it's so easy! Go all in and add a T-birds logo on your jacket, and you're set:)

Paulie Bleeker

Paulie from Juno is SO cute, and quaint, and adorable, and wow, should we even go on?! Yes, his wardrobe choices aren't really one for the books, in fact, he dresses so normal that a costume of him wouldn't be a huge difference than what any other guy would wear...but hey, he can really pull of the McDonald's colors very well, and his oh so tiny running shorts are pretty sweet. So go simple and grab your sweatband and be Bleeker for the night!

Sam Shukowsky

Sam is our favorite. Sam and Suzy are our favorite. Can we be more OBSESSED?! Sam is an adventurer, and the star of Moonrise Kingdom, who wants to see the world and never get stuck in one place. And what's better is his romantic nature, and love for the outdoors. Dig out your old boy scout gear and find a coon skin cap and your Sam. P.S. Don't forget a pipe and glasses.

Gary and Wyatt

Weird Science boys, Gary and Wyatt are two of the doofiest characters we could find. Wearing bras on their heads really kind of explain it all. Just wear that and your set! The real question is, where can you find a computer that can create your dream woman?? These boys are the best.

So there's our list of boys to be this Halloween! Hopefully we inspired some last-minute ideas:) Happy Halloween ya Doofs!

#knowyourbeauty

Webster Groves High School is home to many clubs and organizations, one being The Feminist Coalition, a group that meets to understand, promote, and celebrate equality of not only the sexes, but of race, sexual orientation, and all other types. It's the first club of its kind at the high school, and so far they have accumulated a large group of members, and have already participated in some important and diverse events. It's so great to know that high schoolers now have the opportunity to be in such a club, and that the awareness on topics like feminism are becoming more widespread and understood through clubs like these.
So today, the club is participating in the hashtag #knowyourbeauty in an effort to promote confidence, self-awareness, and acceptance through social media. The idea is that through individuals posting pictures of themselves using the hashtag, the idea will spread from Webster Groves, to different schools, and states, and people. It's a fantastic idea. So here are some pictures of us, Doofykooks knowing and OWNING our beauty, and you all should do the same! We've also included some other inspirational photos to go along with the idea. So KNOW your beauty, and help others to know it too. Acceptance of others starts with acceptance of ourselves.

These next images were taken from Rookie Mag and made by the talented Kendra Yee, and called 'In My Own Skin'. Here's how she describes the series:

For this series, I drew little takes on self-portraits interacting with my skin’s “flaws”: freckles, bumps, hair, etc. Details that some may see as “unattractive.”

There are an amazing example of knowing your beauty.  Even the parts of ourselves that we aren's so fond of, we have to learn to accept and eventually, see them as a part of our beauty, like Kendra does so beautifully in this series. Check out the rest on Rookie Mag:)

These next images were also taken from Rookie Mag and made by Shriya Samavai. Here's what she says about her series (there are eight other images in the series):

"I find myself regularly photographing my shadow because it is a projection of myself that exists in a way my body can’t. My shadow can encompass concrete, blades of grass, sand on the beach, or a fir tree. It allows me to sink into my surroundings and extend myself in a new way. As long as there is a light source, my shadow, my twin, is there. It’s comforting when I’m walking somewhere alone. I feel like I have a friend with me."

This coincides well with the #knowyourbeauty campaign.  It shows a creative way that you can take hold of your beauty, and carry it with you wherever you go. It shows how your beauty is knowing that you're there for YOURSELF, and that you have to be comfortable in that fact, because you are your own best friend.

So everyone should post a picture of themselves where they feel beautiful and tag it with #knowyourbeauty !!! It is a great cause and an important message. You are all BEAUTIFUL :))) Love, the Doofykooks.

Lets Play Dress Up

Here, we give you our eight picks for female personas we want to try out this halloween.  These are the girls that inspire us cinematically with their quirky/cool styles, their exuding confidence, and their unforgettable looks. Take a look, and try one or more of these out this weekend!

Margot Tenenbaum

First, we give you Margot Tenenbaum from The Royal Tenenbaums. She is the daughter of the insensitive Royal Tenenbaum, who irrelevantly always points out that she is adopted. She mopes throughout the film, secretly smoking in her bathroom, unbeknownst to anyone in her family, all the while killing it in the notably iconic fur coat she always wears. Her hair pinned to the side at all times, and a frown plastered to her face, she makes sad look good.

Cher Herowitz

No one forgets Cher. Even though this outfit may have become a little overdone around this time of year, any look from Clueless is nevertheless iconic, and a necessary addition to our top eight list. Her outfits are slightly over the top, preppy, and fashion oh-so foreword. She exudes confidence and boasts such a hopeful, romantic-at-heart kind of aura. Plus, all you need to do is find some plaid at your local thrift store, and you've got an outfit. Just don't forget the matching headband and skirt.

Holly Golightly

A country girl turned New York socialite, Holly Golightly has become one of THE most iconic of female characters, in her role in Breakfast at Tiffany's. She is a curious character, her cat is named Cat, her couch is made from a bathtub, and she is more than a little bit scatterbrained...we might even call her a doofykook! But her style, ohh her style...She is chic and elegant times ten. Even when awoken early in the morning, she appears in a gold and teal mask that shows she's even pretty when she sleeps. Always overdone, never without lipstick, Holly's style is one for the books.

Andie Walsh

Andie Walsh is a working class high schooler, with a major crush on the preppy Blane McDonough. It's a classic high school story, seen in Pretty in Pink. She's on the wrong side of the tracks, and he's a rich playboy, plus Andie's best friend, "Duckie" is in lover with her, but plays it off as a joke. She is sooo cool though. She works at a new wave music store, and she wears pink like never before. Andie makes her working-class wardrobe work! Pink lipstick, matching separates, and a hopeful spirit, and you've become Andie Walsh.

Penny Lane

She's NOT a groupie, she's a bandaid. A lover of music. The star of Almost Famous, Penny Lane is fantastic, she's the woman to be...going on tour with a killer rock band, meeting new people, living on the road...nothing could be better! Even though she's got her issues, especially concerning love, she can sure whip out an amazing outfit and make it look as carefree and effortless as possible. The fur coat is everything, and the big, boho-esque hair pulls it all together. I wanna be Penny Lane everyday, she's a total IT girl.

Suzy Bishop

Not to pick favorites...but Suzy is the best of the best. The protagonist in Moonrise Kingdom, she's a lonely, imaginative, smart girl who's fallen in love with an equally lonely boy scout. A lover of adventure books, she wants to adventure herself, not get stuck in one place. Her natural look is stunning, with a touch of bright blue shadow on her lids, adding to her moody look.  Even on the runaway, she is put together.  Knee-high socks, cutesy little dresses, and of course, the real-live beetle earrings her boy made for her, she is the epitome of cool.

Wanda Woodward

Although her character wasn't as big a role as some of our other picks, Wanda Woodward from Cry Baby definitely makes you stop and stare. She's a badass chick in in gang of drapes, and her look says it all.  Her deep, angry gaze behind cat-eye liner and a bold red lip are daring, and nothing is more biker-chic than a leather jacket. If looks could kill...

Wednesday Addams

And last but certainly not least, we have Wednesday Addams, from, of course, The Addams Family. Always in black, never more than a smirk on her face.  She raises spiders, is fascinated with death, and plays with headless dolls, but for some reason she is just too cool. She says, "I'll stop wearing black when they invent another color," and let's just say, she makes grim look very good.

So there's our top female character looks to try for Halloween this year...hope we inspired some costume ideas! <333

Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O'Shea

On January 10th, 2018 I attended a concert for a very talented band, Tennis.  I decided to go alone. The definition of alone is “having no ...
