Doof Of The Week: Gianna Metzger

Meet our Doof Of The Week, the fabulous Gianna Metzger!! She's cooler than cool.. check out what she has to say <3

What are you listening to/reading/watching right now?

Hmm, College by Animal Collective off the Sung Tongs album has to be my most listened to jam of all time. It's a comforting song with its only lyrics expressing, "You don't have to go to college." I can't explain why, but it's an incredible stress reliever. Let's see, I just finished the book Bad Feminism by Roxanne Gay, it was super informative! And the TV show Skins has been my #1 obsession recently!

Sartorial signature?

I kind of dress like a 12 year old boy. And on some days a 60 year old man. But I would say my go to signature is black shoes to keep me feelin goth AF 💀

Secret skill?

Why go to a hair salon when you can go to me?! I'm free of charge. I'll cut ya bangs! I cut all my friends hair :-)

Latest discovery?

This discovery rolls around every year around November/December and that's Christmas music! I created a bomb Xmas playlist the other day. Let's just say, If you haven't heard Lady Gaga's "Christmas Tree" you need to do so RIGHT NOW.

What does being a doofykook mean to you?

Being a doofykook to me means the complete freedom of expression. Dye your hair! Cut it all off! Stand out. Do what makes you happy. Being a little kooky can brighten your day alone.

T.V. show character you want to be BFFs with and why?

I want to be a Gilmore Girl! I would do anything to be best friends with Loralie and Rory, they seem like such down to earth gals.

Who are your idols/inspirations?

The holy trinity inspires me. And when I say holy trinity I mean Nicki, Beyoncé, and Rihanna.

Quote or phrase you live by?

"If the loch ness monster is ever proven to be real i’m throwing a huge party and im gonna get messED UP."

Words of advice to people your age?

Self love is the key to success. It can be hard. I'm not always succeeding the goal myself, but it really helps if you tell yourself you're worth it at least once a day. Wake up with a smile.

You are one of the founders of the Webster Groves Feminist Coalition- can you talk about what made you want to start that club, as well as your thoughts on feminism?

My friends and I love each other endlessly. We wanted to create a safe place for people to create bonds with other activists in our school. Being an activist/feminist in our community is SO important and you can find some incredible people in our coalition. My thoughts on feminism are extremely positive. Feminism changed my lifestyle. Through feminism I became a much more positive person and I can confirm that I am MUCH happier since I discovered it.

Talk about something else you think is important?

Please, hug a dog.

Anything else you'd like to talk about or add?

Hug another dog.

Thanks for answering Gianna! Stay DOOFY, and look for more posts on the blog coming sooooon :)

November Tunes

Here's the November playlist!!! We've been listening to a lot of new music lately that we are soo excited about. First things first, is Borderline by Tove Styrke <3 It is electrifyingly cool, and the music video is incredible. It's a great work out song and has been on repeattttt. Other pump up songs we love include Pure Grinding by Avicii, which SERIOUSLY gets ya goin, Sugar by Robin Schultz, and let's not forget HOTLINE BLING. It's the latest obsession and how can you not love it? There's also the slower, softer tunes from the wonderful Corinne Bailey Rae, Soko, Ann Farina, and the Moldy Peaches.  And lastly, there's the more electric-like vibes from Zhu, Childish Gambino, Au Revoir Simone, Poolside, and Ducktails. And our number one fav the past few weeks HAS to be The Morning by The Weekend. It's a real keeper. Never not necessary. So here's what we've been into lately, plus more that we didn't mention here. Take a listen, and for more of what were vibin to, follow us on Spotify at thedoofykooks :)

STL Fashion Week

This week, Doofykooks, Molly and Sydney attended Saint Louis Fashion Week for the first time. Having attended Missouri Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week before, going to a fashion show is no new territory for us, but STL was a new and exciting venue that we were excited to hear about. Saint Louis Fashion Week was started in 2006 in the idea that midwestern fashion designers could have a way to launch their careers. The largest of its kind in the midwest, the fashion show has even shown well-known designers such as Rebecca Taylor, who Kelly has seen at Mercedez-Benz Fashion Week, Timo Weiland, and Tess Giberson. More than 10,000 attended and they also raised over 10,000 for charity which is amazing. The runway shows were fierce and energetic, and the presentations were just as cool. The designers were supposed to draw their inspiration from a work of art, which you can identify in some of the photos from the presentations. It's interesting to see how each designer depicts the works of art, and how they carry their brand identity through the unique challenge. Beyond the fashion, it is a cool event that brings a lot of the midwest fashion lovers together. Molly and Sydney were even scouted for modeling! Overall, STL Fashion Week was a huge success, and were thrilled that some Doofs got to attend.

It's moments like these that capture the true fierceness of each of us; that evokes confidence within us, and the joy of the simplicity in nature and in friendship. Halloween Playlist

Happy Halloween ya doofs! Even though we already did an October playlist, we had to do a halloween playlist because there are too many amazingly creepy-cool songs out there. I mean, how can you not listen to the Monster Mash and Thriller around this time of year?! But we also included a lot more than those yearly favorites. There are the ethereal, mysterious voices of CocoRosie, First Aid Kit, and Blue Foundation. Some classic rock vibes from Bowie, The Black Keys, The Who, and Portugal, The Man. And then there are just some fun, very out-there songs from the likes of the Black Lips, Kimya Dawson, and Cherry Glazerr + many more! These are all the songs you need for a perfectly haunting halloween this year. Enjoy, and have a frightful night ;)

Let's Play Dress Up Part 2

So... yesterday we gave you our top female character picks for Halloween costumes this year.  And now, we give you our top male picks! These guys are inspiring, a little kooky, and obviously, their wardrobes are on FLEEK! So check it out and get inspired by these cool characters.

Will Smith

Well, we had to start off with a favorite, and there's NO ONE quite like Will Smith. I mean, he's the grooviest, coolest, most hilarious character and real-life personality there is. And his style doesn't fall short either. Always decked out in lots of color, matched with a great facial expression, and a swagger that says "I'm too cool for you", he's one that we will never ever stop obsessing over. EVER.

Danny Zuko

Danny Zuko. The ultimate babe and Grease star. He literally kills it in the simplest of ensembles. White tee, leather jacket, hair slicked back just perfectly. No wonder Sandy falls so hard. This is a great idea for a costume, especially if you are short on time, because it's so easy! Go all in and add a T-birds logo on your jacket, and you're set:)

Paulie Bleeker

Paulie from Juno is SO cute, and quaint, and adorable, and wow, should we even go on?! Yes, his wardrobe choices aren't really one for the books, in fact, he dresses so normal that a costume of him wouldn't be a huge difference than what any other guy would wear...but hey, he can really pull of the McDonald's colors very well, and his oh so tiny running shorts are pretty sweet. So go simple and grab your sweatband and be Bleeker for the night!

Sam Shukowsky

Sam is our favorite. Sam and Suzy are our favorite. Can we be more OBSESSED?! Sam is an adventurer, and the star of Moonrise Kingdom, who wants to see the world and never get stuck in one place. And what's better is his romantic nature, and love for the outdoors. Dig out your old boy scout gear and find a coon skin cap and your Sam. P.S. Don't forget a pipe and glasses.

Gary and Wyatt

Weird Science boys, Gary and Wyatt are two of the doofiest characters we could find. Wearing bras on their heads really kind of explain it all. Just wear that and your set! The real question is, where can you find a computer that can create your dream woman?? These boys are the best.

So there's our list of boys to be this Halloween! Hopefully we inspired some last-minute ideas:) Happy Halloween ya Doofs!

Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O'Shea

On January 10th, 2018 I attended a concert for a very talented band, Tennis.  I decided to go alone. The definition of alone is “having no ...
