ART

Photography by Maggie, Molly, and Sam Craig

The doofykooks took on another STL adventure last weekend, taking the day to explore different parts of the graffiti wall and Forest Park. There was some skateboarding, (and some falls...), cool statues to be admired, and so much springtime sun to soak up. There really is art everywhere...in the gorgeous graffiti displays, statues, and bridges everywhere, to the radiating sun and vibrant array of colors all around. Saint Louis in the spring is ripe with liveliness and beauty and ART. Even the smiles and the expressions in this shoot are pure art and pure happiness. PURE DOOF. So get out and explore this beautiful city before it gets too sticky, and enjoy this fun shoot. Happy Monday Doofs!

BABE

Recently, my wonderful boyfriend bought me the book I was dying to have: BABE, by Petra Collins. Petra is my idol, my inspiration, one of the coolest chicks I've heard of. When I found out she had another book coming out I was after it. And when I saw that my other idol, Tavi Gevinson had written the foreword, I was craving it. Babe is Petra's curated compilation of work by young female artists. It captures the voices and visions of the girls who are shaping this generation of women. It exemplifies a 'contemporary girl power revolution' with kooky collages, and thought-provoking photography. It even includes some of Petra's deepest work, in my opinion. She takes young girl's accounts of being sexually abused, or put down based on their gender, and simply writes them in doodly handwriting...portraying the vulnerability and deep emotion in a girlish, hidden way. It amazes me how all the artists in the book can fuel their work with such heavy topics yet show them in the most intriguing, comforting ways. Although some of the photos are racey and perhaps too explicit for some, the book should not be sexualized, but rather admired for its freeness and acceptance. It portrays beauty in unconventional ways and that is amazing. We encourage everyone of you doofs to check it out! And take a look at more of Petra's work and Tavi's work for inspiration!

Magz + Emkill

Photography by Emilee  Killeen, Maggie Nash, and Molly Nash

“I am looking for friends. What does that mean -- tame?"

"It is an act too often neglected," said the fox. "It means to establish ties."

"To establish ties?"

"Just that," said the fox. "To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. And you, on your part, have no need of me. To you I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world....”

― Antoine de Saint-ExupĂ©ryThe Little Prince

I came across these old photos in a long-lost GroupMe chat, and immediately, thought of my favorite book, The Little Prince, and in particular, my favorite part with the fox. The Prince learns that when you tame another, they become special only to you. There are a million roses, a thousand foxes, and many many princes in the world, but he learns that the ones he decides to tame become the only important ones in all the millions. Upon taming the fox, he learns true friendship and finds joy in that discovery. These photos of Maggie and Emilee encompass that pure joy, and beauty, comfort, and friendship. These are just two of the people who I have tamed, two people who have tamed me. They are unique in all the world to me, and to each other, and it shows in these photos. There is nothing like friendship...feeling so close to another, sharing your best and worst moments, really being yourself around another... They are the fox to my prince and vice versa. There is so much life in both these doofykooks, and I had to share these long-overdue pictures. So happy April! Love, thedoofykooks :)

April Playlist

Happy April DOOFS! It's hard to believe it's already spring, and it's starting to really feel like it finally! Here is the April playlist-our mix of new favorites and old loves that we want to share with you. Getting us in the real spring-mode is an oldie: Dreams by the Cranberries, which makes us want to go on a drive and feel the wind in our hair. We also feel the spring vibes with Featherstone by the Paper Kites, Hummed Low by Odessa, and the relaxed All The Time by the Bahamas. These songs will really make you smile and feel relaxed. As usual, we like some more upbeat song like that from MO, the newly discovered Yall, Santigold, and Melanie Martinez. Especially if you like to work out, we've got some rap to get you going from our favorites Skizzy Mars and G-Eazy, two musical geniuses! And lastly, if you're feeling the feels and need some calmer, cooler sounds for your day, the incredible Lolawolf, ASTR, Aayushi, and Wet can help you out. Check out all of these songs and artists among others not mentioned! We love them all and we'd love to hear suggestions from you too. Follow us at thedoofykooks on Spotify to hear more of what we're obsessing over. Happy listening :)))
